2018 Prairiland Beta Club State Convention

February 9-10, 74 of our Prairiland Beta Club members traveled to Grapevine, Texas, for the Texas State Sr. Beta Convention.  The Beta Club is an academic organization that promotes service and leadership in our schools and community. Our students competed in a variety of academic, talent, speaking, art, service, and performance competitions.  Prairiland High School Beta Club has been recognized as a School of Merit and brought home 20 state titles from the state convention. One of the most important awards was second place in School Service for the entire state. Our Prairiland Betas logged around 18,000 hours of school and community service.

Keldon May won Texas State President and his Campaign Skit team won 3rd place.  It will advance with him to nationals in Savannah, Georgia, in June. Shawonna Rhoades served as the Texas State Sponsor and will again next year.

We would like to thank Chris Holt, Cory Wood, Kim Moore, Misty Smith, and Franky Sessums for all their help and direction with the set and Mika Reynolds for loaning us some dresses.

Our Scrapbook won second. The hours that go into this book is outrageous and takes all year to put together and complete.  Vickie Chapman as the coach and ran that team. Stacy Walker assisted with the students and the majority of the club members colored, traced, drew, cropped pictures, and typed articles for it.

Our Beta Build team won first place.  They had to build multi-step machine that performed a  5 step task given to them at state with a tub of supplies of specific items.  They then were judged on ingenuity, design, completion of the task, group cooperation during the building, and their team interview.  This competition takes a lot of engineering skills, creativity, and common sense.

(1st place state Beta Build team - Justin Eudy, Eli Rolen, Cole Wright, and TJ Folse)

The Prairiland Beta Club will compete in total of 25 national contests in Savannah, Georgia, in June.  They advanced in all the above contests plus two contests they won at the Texas Beta Leadership Conference in October, Service Snapshot and Lead Outside The Box Leadership Challenge. Plus, there are four events that have been added at nationals for them to enter that include Site-Up Technology Challenge, Meeting of the Minds, Convention Invention, and the Reimagine, Recreate, and Recycle Fashion Challenge.

Shawonna Rhoades, Vickie Chapman, Crystal Folse, Stacy Walker, and Frankye Sessums are the high school Beta sponsors and would like to thank all the other parents volunteers for their countless hours in the Beta concession stands and/or at our club practices raising money and preparing our kids for competition.  Our club deeply appreciates our administrations, the school board, faculty, parents, the Blossom Church of God for letting us build backdrops and practice their, Pastor Dollins, and all of our communities support over the course of this year.
